NEOFLO 4633
A Synthetic Drilling Fluid
What is NEOFLO 4633?
This product is classified as a synthetic gas-to-liquids base drilling fluid because it is produced from the reaction of a purified feedstock, rather than from highly refined or processed mineral oils, which are made through the distillation or refining of crude oil. It is an innovative, multi-application synthetic drilling base fluid derived from natural gas, leading the way in meeting drilling demands and future challenges in the most environmentally friendly and safe manner.
What is a Synthetic Drilling Fluid?
In simple terms, “synthetic” applies to the process by which the end product was manufactured, where the ending molecules of the process are not normally found in nature. Fluids from chemical processes are defined as being “synthetic”, while fluids extracted from refinery streams are generally defined as being “oil-based.”
Drilling fluids are either water-based or oil-based and are used by well operators when drilling for oil and gas. The horizontal section, or ‘lateral,’ of each well is typically drilled with an oil-based fluid that consists primarily of a base oil, along with barite, clay, and chemical additives. Thanks to advances in drilling technology and fluid formulations, diesel is no longer the only option for base oil.
The Leading Drilling Fluid
NEOFLO 4633 is a premium-quality base suitable for use in conventional and unconventional land and deep-water applications. Because of its clean natural gas origin, it contains virtually no aromatics nor contaminants such as sulfur and amines.
Operators are increasingly exploring NEOFLO 4633 synthetic drilling base fluid and evaluating its performance benefits compared to diesel. They are particularly focused on understanding:
– Faster rate of penetration
– Lower base oil consumption
– Thinner mud viscosity due to fewer compounds interacting with shale
– Higher lubricity for faster casing running speeds
– Longer mud motor runs, requiring fewer trips in and out of the hoe
Storage and Handling
NEOFLO 4633 may be stored in mild steel or stainless steel tanks. Seals and gaskets may be made from compressed asbestos fiber, PTFE, Viton A and Viton B. Natural rubbers, PVC, polystyrene and copper alloys are unsuitable materials for use with NEOFLO 4633. The recommended storage and handling temperature is between 15°C and 45°C.
Benefits of Using NEOFLO 4633
The performance improvements translate into savings that far outweigh the initial cost, with the health, safety, and environmental benefits of NEOFLO 4633 serving as additional advantages for operators. Its lack of aromatic compounds and high flash point reduce vapor exposure to workers, minimize odor, and lower pollution risks. Additionally, NEOFLO 4633 is readily biodegradable, allowing operators to use microbes to break down residual oil on drill cuttings to acceptable levels, thereby reducing liability and disposal costs.
